The figures given here differ from those shown in previous editions because they
now to all motor vehicles and include the numbers of exempt vehicles, which were
previously excluded. 2. Motorways and A roads. 3. Figures from 1993 onwards
are on a different basis from those for previous years, due to a change in the
source of the data. Figures from the new source are about 2.4% lower than those
from the previous source. The calculated percentage change includes an allowance
for this. 4. The figures for 1995 (and earlier years) are not directly comparable
to the figures for 1996 (and later years) due to the effect on the method of estimation
of local government reorganisation and changes to the trunk road network.
