1. The Vehicle Information Database estimate of the age is based on the assumption that all vehicles are aged 1 year in the year of registration (e.g. all cars registered for the first time in 1998 are assumed to be 1 year old at 3 December 1998).
2. Includes all two wheeled motor vehicles.
3. For years up to 1992 estimates are taken from the DVLA annual census, from 1993 onwards estimates are taken from DETR's Vehicle Information Database. This may have had an effect on the continuity of the figures.
4. A change in the level of vehicle excise duty for taxis and hire cars in the 1989 budget led to a fall in the number licensed as public transport vehicles. For years up to 1994 estimates of public transport vehicles include some with 8 or fewer seats. From 1995 onwards estimates include only those vehicles with more than 8 seats.
