Cycling is an active, healthy, sustainable and enjoyable mode of transport that can take the place of motorised transport for many day to day journeys.
The Scottish Government is keen to increase levels of cycling, both as a transport mode and a leisure activity. In order to achieve this, the Government supports a number of organisations and initiatives, including
- Core-funding of Cycling Scotland
- Encouraging local authorities to develop cycling strategies as part of their local transport strategies and to link these with education and health improvement initiatives
- Providing support to local authorities for cycling projects through dedicated allocations for cycling, walking and safer streets (CWSS) projects
- Funding the National Cycle Network in Scotland through sustainable transport charity Sustrans
- Tackling the school run by promoting school travel plans and active travel projects through Sustrans.
Cycling Scotland
Cycling Scotland is an independent organisation providing a greater focus on achieving the targets of the National Cycling Strategy. Cycling Scotland works in co-operation with cycling stakeholders, local authorities and several Government departments, and coordinates national events such as " Pedal for Scotland" and " Bike Week".
In November 2007 at Cycling Scotland's Annual Conference, Stewart Stevenson confirmed Government support for developing a Cycling Action for Scotland. This is now being taken forward.
