What is the Sustainable Development Commission?
The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) is an advisory Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB). It was jointly appointed by the four United Kingdom administrations and reports directly to the First Minister in Scotland, as well as to the Prime Minister, the First Minister in Wales and the administration in Northern Ireland.
What does it do?
The Commission's role is to advocate sustainable development across all sectors in the UK, review progress towards it, and build consensus on the actions needed if further progress is to be achieved.
Commissioners
There are currently 19 Commissioners, who are led by the Chairman, Jonathon Porritt. Scottish interests are represented by Professor Jan Bebbington (Vice Chair Scotland) - appointed in July 2006 - and Hugh Raven.
Scotland
The Commissioners and secretariat work with Scottish Government directorates and agencies to promote sustainable development. The Commission also works with a wide range of policy networks, such as the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum and the Sustainable Scotland Network.
The Commission had one member of staff in Scotland from May 2004 until December 2006, when there was expansion of its resources to five staff.
The Scottish secretariat is led by Director Maf Smith. The secretariat is able to draw on the knowledge of the Scottish Commissioners, as well as the other Commissioners and Secretariat from across the UK, in their work with Scottish Government directorates and agencies to promote sustainable development.
The work of the Commission in Scotland has been funded by the Scottish Government since May 2004.
