Equalities Classifications
Statisticians within the Scottish Government are currently working to develop a set of classifications and guidance notes to assist all public bodies in Scotland in the collection, analysis and dissemination of data relating to the six equalities strands: Age, Gender, Disability, Sexual Orientation, Ethnicity, and Religion/Belief.
On 30 July 2008, the Scotland's new Official Ethnicity Classification was published and is recommended for Scotland's 2011 Census and Scottish Official Statistics.
Collecting Equality Information
The Scottish Government have developed a series of guidance notes to assist in the collection of equality information. These guidance notes provide practical advice on how to present recommended questions and how to analyse and disseminate the data. In December 2008 the Scottish Government published guidance on asking questions on age, ethnic group, gender and religion/belief. Currently the Scottish Government is undertaking work to develop questions for collecting information on disability and sexual orientation/identity in social surveys, in Scotland. Guidance notes for these strands will be published after the recommended questions have been finalised.
We welcome any comments you have on these guidance notes, especially any relating to the practical application of the guidance. They will be revised and updated when necessary.
