Firearms Certificates
There were 26,056 firearm certificates on issue at the end of 2007 covering the possession of 66,893 firearms. Similarly, there were 49,213 shot gun certificates on issue at the end of 2007, covering the possession of 133,940 shot guns.
Although the numbers of both firearm and shot gun certificates continue to decline, the numbers of firearms and shot guns held on certificate are rising and stand at their highest level in the last 10 years. This is because more than one weapon can be held on the same certificate.
