Criminal Appeals

A total of 2,254 criminal appeals were concluded in the High Court of Justiciary in 2007-08. This represents an increase of 6% compared with 2006-07, but is still 30% lower than the equivalent figure 10 years ago.

Note: A judicial direction in September 2002 meant that priority was given to dealing with solemn conviction appeals. Additional resources in the form of temporary judges were made available in January 2004 to help deal with the resulting backlog of appeals.
