Sentences Imposed

The total number of persons convicted in Scottish courts fell steadily from 149,300 in 1997-98 to 113,200 in 2000-01, since when there has been some rise in numbers to just over 138,800 in 2006-07. While numbers from the Sheriff Summary courts (which account for the majority of all persons convicted) increased by 7% over the last 10 years and numbers from Sheriff Solemn courts increased by 59% over these years, the number from the District (Justice of the Peace) Courts fell by 27% over this time period.
