Rural Definitions Map

The 6 Fold 2003-2004 Urban-Rural Classification map provides a standard definition of rural areas in Scotland. If more detailed information is required, then the 8 Fold 2003-2004 Urban-Rural Classification map (which can also be accessed through the link above) can also be used.
Generally, rural Scotland is defined as settlements with a population of less than 3000. We further understand the differences between remote and more accessible rural areas by classifying settlements as:
- remote rural - those with a greater than 30-minute drivetime to the nearest settlement with a population of greater than 10,000;
- accessible rural - those with a 30-minute or less drivetime to the nearest settlement with a population of greater than 10,000.
Please note that this definition is not used by the Scottish Government in every instance but can vary between different policy intiatives.
