Mainstreaming across the Government

Our goal is a Scotland which values its different communities, fosters respect for diversity, challenges prejudice and discrimination and heralds justice and equality.

Mainstreaming equality is our process to achieve this goal. Mainstreaming equality is the systematic integration of an equality perspective into the everyday work of government, involving policy makers across all Government directorates, as well as equality specialists and external partners.

The Scottish Government has established a Mainstreaming Equality Project which is based within the Equality Unit. The aim of the project team is to ensure that all policies, legislation and services are designed and delivered in a way that is sensitive to the diverse needs and experiences of all people living in Scotland

The Mainstreaming Equality Project Team will actively promote an equalities perspective and ensure compliance with statutory equality duties in all the work of the Scottish Government by developing systems and structures and providing support to staff to implement change.

  • It will raise awareness amongst staff of their role and responsibilities
  • Develop supportive structures and systems and build knowledge amongst staff of how to use them.
  • Support and enable staff to use the structures and systems to identify impacts of potential and existing policies and programmes on equality groups
