Introduction

Section 25-31 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act (2003) places duties on the Local Authorities with respect to the care, support, and the promotion of well-being and social development. It is often abbreviated to "section 26".

Anyone who has, or has had a mental illness, personality disorder or learning disability, should be assisted by their local authority to lead lives as normal as possible. This means helping them to fulfil their ambitions in relation to their personal life, leisure, training and employment.
