Location
The Convention meets biannually, in spring and autumn, and can be held in any location within the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Its location alternates between a mainland and island setting with the local authority for that area hosting the event.
Rotation
On 23rd March 2009 it returned to Arran. On Monday 26th October 2009 it will meet in Argyll.
Membership
Membership organisations are appointed by the First Minister. Members are chosen from the public agencies and institutions with responsibilities for, or interests in, the economic and social development of the Highlands and Islands. Members of the Convention are expected to attend each Convention to allow for continuity. Substitutes are allowed however, should they be unable to attend.
The core membership is 26 and includes The Highland Council, Argyll and Bute Council, Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, Moray Council, North Ayrshire Council, Orkney Islands Council, Shetland Islands Council, VisitScotland, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Bord na Gaidhlig, The Crofters Commission, Forestry Commission Scotland, NHS Highland, NHS Orkney, NHS Shetland, NHS Western Isles, Scottish Natural Heritage, University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute, University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute Academic Council, Cairngorm National Park and Skills Development Scotland. Additional members can be co-opted on for specific meetings as agenda items dictate.
