Meeting format

The aim

The aim of the Convention of the Highlands and Islands is to strengthen alignment between the Scottish Government and member organisations to contribute to the Government's purpose of focussing Government and public services on creating opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish through increasing sustainable economic growth. CoHI facilitates the exchange of ideas on strategic issues affecting the people of the Highlands and Islands.

Meetings

Meetings are chaired by the First Minister or in his absence another Minister. Up to 4 Ministers may be present on the day.

Meetings are open to the public but only in the capacity of observers.

Agenda

It is normal practice to have three papers presented on the day aswell as a standing item on the economic recovery. Additional information papers may also be prepared. The papers may be written and presented by member agencies or by Scottish Government policy officials. The agenda is chosen by the First Minister after wide consultation with the members.

Particular importance is placed on sharing successful experience and showcasing best practice.

At the meetings the subject is debated and action points are agreed either by members or by Ministers and are reported back on at the next meeting.
