FOREWORD

Richard Lochhead, MSP Cabinet Secretary photoI am delighted to endorse this forward-looking document in which the salmon and freshwater fisheries sector put in place their vision for the sustainable future of fisheries in Scotland.

Scotland's iconic freshwater fisheries are rightly world renowned. They represent a major contribution to the economic and social wellbeing of Scotland's people, while protecting species that are integral to Scotland's biodiversity.

It is a matter of huge significance that a group representing so many of the fishing interests in Scotland have worked together to develop this framework, which all interests have agreed to operate to achieve the shared goal of sustainably managed freshwater fish and fisheries resources in Scotland. This is truly a strategic vision that will provide significant economic and social benefits for its people.

This is an excellent framework within which progress towards future management of fisheries in Scotland can evolve. It recognises that management of fisheries will necessarily vary through individual circumstances and does not promote a prescriptive approach to fisheries management.

I hope that anglers and fishermen will engage and support this framework and contribute to the priorities for action that it sets out. These will inform our understanding of how freshwater fisheries should be managed in future to the benefit of all who have an interest in our rich and diverse freshwater environment.

I congratulate the group on their visionary work so far, and will be supporting and following their progress in the hard work that lies ahead. Scotland's international image as a premier destination for all who enjoy angling and other outdoor pursuits is already well established, and I firmly believe that the process set in train by this Strategic Framework will enhance that image yet further.
