14. Integrated Care Pathways

The 2007 NHSQIS Integrated Care Pathways offer a framework for assessing the appropriate service responses for many in this care group.

Substance misuse issues are relevant to the assessment, care and treatment of the 5 conditions identified for ICPs, (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, dementia and borderline personality disorder) and should be incorporated into the work of ICP groups.

Delivering for Mental Health has identified the development of ICPs as a key action in improving quality of care. This approach has considerable potential for improving the care of those with co-occurring disorders.

Recommendation

Those with co-occurring substance misuse disorders must not be excluded from the benefits of the ICP approach. Evidence of the consideration of the needs of those with co-occurring substance misuse should be an accreditation standard for the ICPs.
