The final totals, which will appear in "Road Accidents Scotland", may differ from the figures given here, due to ( e.g.) late returns and amendments. The figures for a smaller area could be revised by a few percent if, for example, data for several accidents in that area had not been added to the Scottish Executive road accident statistics database by the time that the statistics for this bulletin were extracted

It must also be remembered that there can be quite large percentage year-to-year fluctuations in the figures for areas within Scotland, particularly for those with lower numbers. Therefore, the annual average for the latest five years may be a better guide to the "normal" level of the numbers than the figures for the latest single year
