Main points
- In 2004/05, the average daily population in
Scottish prisons totalled 6,779, an increase of 2 per
cent when compared with the 2003/04 figure of 6,621 and
the highest annual level ever recorded.
- In 2004/05, the average daily female prison
population increased from 314 in 2003/04 to 332, an
increase of 6 per cent.
- The average daily remand population in 2004/05 was
1,216, down 2 per cent compared with the 2003/04 figure
of 1,246.
- The average population of sentenced young offenders
was 560 in 2004/05, a decrease of 2 per cent compared
with the 2003/04 figure of 573.
- The number of long-term adult prisoners, those
sentenced to 4 years or more (including life sentences
and recalls), increased by 5 per cent from 2,641 in
2003/04 to 2,766 in 2004/05.
- The number of short-term adult prisoners, those
sentenced to less than 4 years (excluding fine
defaulters), increased by 4 per cent from 2,100 in
2003/04 to 2,178 in 2004/05.
- The number of receptions for persons who were
imprisoned for defaulting on payment of a fine fell by
11 per cent from 6,888 in 2003/04 to 6,098 in
2004/05.
