| Agriculture | Economic Returns from Variety Trialling in Scotland“The research report reviews the operation of the crop and grass (herbage) variety trialling system in Scotland and looks at the costs involved and appraised the value of Scottish Government interventions.
A number of key representatives from organisations involved in the system, both within and outwith Scotland, were interviewed by the authors of the report. Using this information the authors devised a methodology for calculating the return on the Scottish Government investment.
The research report examines the variety trialling from three different aspects – cereals, grass and other supporting activities. It also compares the different types of trialling, National Listing trials and Recommended List trials and the physical returns form these systems.
Ten options for change, (five for cereals and five for grasses) were analysed and from these, the research report identifies the most promising way forward, including alternative sources of funding for the trials.
